pPulse Yoga is a result of my personal quest to find yoga routines that accomplish much more than other yoga styles. A few years ago I was diagnosed with osteopenia. This is almost osteoporosis, but not quite. I was shocked as I have been practicing yoga for so many years and consider myself to be in very good physical condition. The doctor told me that I needed to do some sort of weight training program. I have never really liked working out in a gym, always preferring yoga. I also did not want to give up precious time allotted to my yoga practice, so I decided to incorporate free weights into my yoga routines./p
pAs a woman in my 50#8217;s, I also wanted more toning, strengthening and increased muscle definition, again without using machines in the gym. So, in addition to the free weights, I added micro movements that primarily target areas such as the gluteus muscles, abdominals, upper arms and lower back. These micro movements within the yoga postures are highly effective with results that are noticeable immediately./p

So you want to get pregnant, but you have been having trouble doing so. I have some great tips that will help you on your way to achieving your goal.br /

First, to know how long your menstrual cycles are, track them on the calendar for 2 or 3 months. Your menstrual cycle starts with the day your period starts and stops the day before your next period starts. If you are not sure the number of days in your menstrual cycle, you can use 28 days. This is the normal length of a menstrual cycle.br /

In order for you to get pregnant, you should have sex before you ovulate, at least two or three days before ovulation – those will be your most fertile days.br /

How will you know when you#039;re going to ovulate? There are many methods available, ovulation predictor kits or tracking your basal body temperature. Research states that the best time for intercourse is the day you notice the most fertile cervical mucus.br /

Fertile cervical mucus is cervical discharge that looks like egg-white and usually appears on the days before ovulation. This will be the time you are most likely to get pregnant.br /

Cigarettes emare/em bad for your health, for example, and drinking and driving actually do not mix. Those are two obvious examples of CW getting it right, and there are definitely a few others, but today, Irsquo;m mostly interested in the popular concept of good posture. What is posture? Is ldquo;good posture,rdquo; as defined by chiropractors, teachers, office ergonomic consultants, drill sergeants, and Grandma (ldquo;straighten up, sonny!rdquo;), actually good for us? Or have the experts gotten it wrong, once again? Looking around me, if people are listening to the professional advice, itrsquo;s bad advice. Slumping, slouching ndash; I see it everywhere, every day, and not just when people are sitting. Can we apply the Primal Blueprint approach to posture and toss it all out?/p

pFirst, letrsquo;s look at how posture has changed over the years in a developed nation like the United States. Before the turn of the 20th century, austere, rigid posture was very much in vogue ndash; or, at least, it was heavily promoted by teachers and authority figures as the right way to sit and stand (corporal punishment, anyone?). Think Victorian. Think stiff and crusty. strongIn the 1920s, though, an entirely new cultural phenomenon emerged./strong Jazz exploded and ldquo;The Great Gatsbyrdquo; was written. The flappers ndash; independent women who flouted convention, listened to jazz, wore short hair, and drank liquor ndash; became the model for young American women to emulate. The hair, the fashion, and the dancing were all fair game, and rightly so, but so was the signature flapper slouch. Instead of standing prim and proper, the corset-less flapper thrust out her pelvis and slouched backwards, hands on her hips. It looked effortlessly cool enough, but it wasnrsquo;t good for back health./p
p/p
pLook familiar? Thatrsquo;s the same pose you see at red carpet events in Hollywood, where every starlet seems to employ that bizarre half-turn followed by a tuck of the pelvis forward when faced with a camera. Itrsquo;s ldquo;slimming,rdquo; or something. Anyway, focusing on chronic postural deficiencies in a subculture may seem odd, but the long-term reverberations can be felt for decades, if not centuries. Besides, itrsquo;s a simple fact that society is influenced by culture, especially youth culture. Cultural adoption of slouching certainly isnrsquo;t the sole reason our posture is so messed up, but itrsquo;s probably a contributing factor./p
pstrongAnother factor is the rise of sedentarism/strong ndash; all that sitting is hell on our backs. As I mentioned in the previous sitting post, most work takes place from the (dis)comfort of an unnatural office chair, whereas in earlier times wersquo;d actually have to move around for our livelihoods. Even those formerly active jobs, in the manufacturing or farming sectors, have been largely automated. Physically demanding tasks demand correct posture, because theyrsquo;re easier and more sustainable that way. Theyrsquo;re kind of self-policing in that respect. But it goes the other way, too; the easier you make the job, the easier it is to get by with poor posture. If all the ldquo;heavy liftingrdquo; is done by machines, the worker is free to slump and slouch./p
pOh, and the fact that strongsedentarism leads to muscle atrophy and inadequate exercise/strong doesnrsquo;t help, either. And when they do get to the gym, itrsquo;s usually to do bicep curls and tricep extensions for an hour. Very few engage their core in any meaningful way. Functional fitness is enjoying a resurgence, but the ldquo;biceps, chest, and trisrdquo; split-style training still dwarfs it in popularity. If everyone did deadlifts, squats, and Olympic lifts with perfect form on a regular basis, our backs would be a lot stronger and our posture would be a lot better./p
pSo, wersquo;ve got influential youth sub-cultures, sedentarism, and inadequate fitness to (at least partly) blame for our posture problems, but how do we fix it? And strongis posture really that important?/strong We seem to be getting by okay, all things considered./p
pThatrsquo;s what they say about the Standard American Diet: ldquo;Oh, but look at our life expectancy. We live longer than ever!rdquo; Howrsquo;s that really working out for us?/p
pPoor posture is incredibly damaging, both to the individual and to society at large. The very obvious downside to poor posture is the debilitating physical pain that accompanies it. If you spend your days sitting, standing, and walking with a fundamentally flawed posture, you are going to be hurting. It may not hit you right away, but it will catch up with you, and if you want to live a long, active life a healthy back is pretty much required. Remember, too, that the spinal cord is essentially a high-bandwidth system for the transfer of information between nerves, organs, and other parts of our anatomy. If your posture is poor and your spine is impacted, some experts even suggest your ability to process information and relay data will be compromised./p
pItrsquo;ll hit you especially hard in the wallet, too. One study showed that for patients who complained of lower back pain ndash; which was over a quarter of those polled ndash; average medical expenditures were 73% higher than those without lower back pain. Those expenses donrsquo;t just disappear into the ether, either; they result in higher premiums across the board for all enrollees, so even if you have perfect posture, yoursquo;re paying for those who donrsquo;t. Wersquo;re all paying for it./p
h4So whatrsquo;s the answer? What is good posture?/h4
pEsther Gokhale has a pretty good handle on posture. She is a ldquo;back whisperer.rdquo; She grew up in India, earned a biochem degree from Princeton, and suffered with debilitating back pain for half of her life. When back surgery didnrsquo;t work (protip: it rarely works), she decided to get to the root of the problem and figure out what does work for back pain. She didnrsquo;t try every new-fangled treatment, though. Instead, Gokhale (unwittingly) channeled Weston Price and traveled to those cultures where back pain is virtually unknown despite men and women working long hours of backbreaking labor. She went to isolated African, Brazilian, and Indian villages to mimic the gait, the stance, and the posture of the inhabitants. These guys have been doing it right for centuries, and we all share the same genes and the same basic skeletal system, so it makes sense that what worked for them will work for the average Westerner (sounds pretty Primal, huh?)./p
pstrongThe key to avoiding back pain (and, it turns out, achieving healthy posture) lies in the pelvis./strong Or, rather, the key lies in the positioning of the pelvis. Popular posture advice tells us to tuck the pelvis, to bring it forward. Tucking the pelvis is conducive to achieving that arched, S-curve back that the experts say is healthy and natural, but itrsquo;s actually counterproductive to sustainable, healthy posture. Gokhale blames medical professionals for that one, suggesting that the constancy of seeing patients with poor posture (which is almost everyone in developed nations) has conditioned doctors to consider the average S-curved back as normal and actually ideal. Itrsquo;s not, though. The ideal posture should be mostly straight (or J-shaped, with the bottom curve of the #8220;J#8221; representing the curve of the anteverted pelvis), and it should be effortless and natural./p
pInstead of tucking the pelvis, think about ldquo;duckingrdquo; it, as in Daffy Duck. Look at his posture: strongpelvis back, butt slightly out, torso leaning forward/strong. Itrsquo;s exaggerated, but we want to keep that posture in mind. The technical term is anteverting the pelvis. Think about moving your pelvis back, as if you were a fat guy trying to look down at his toes. Allow your heels to bear your bodyrsquo;s weight as you move your torso slightly forward. Moving your torso forward may feel like excessive leaning, but thatrsquo;s okay; this is a bit like going barefoot after a lifetime of wearing shoes, so itrsquo;s going to feel unnatural. Relax your abdominals. Now, check yourself out in a mirror. You may feel different (I did), but your back should be straight and you should actually look completely normal. Itrsquo;s rather sad, but it feels strange because wersquo;re just not used to standing with correct, natural posture./p
pIrsquo;ve rarely mentioned posture in the past, and I regret that. Going forward, I think wersquo;ll be revisiting this subject with more frequency. Irsquo;m also going to give Gokhalersquo;s ideas a trial run, but Irsquo;m pretty confident shersquo;s on the money. After all, therersquo;s always been a soft spot in my heart for research that uses anthropological evidence./p

When I decided to return to college several years ago to complete my bachelor#039;s degree, I had no other choice but to apply for student loans. I knew that would being paying back student loans for several years but this was the only way that I would be able to return to school to complete my degree. Now that I am almost finished and ready to graduate, I spoke with our financial aid office to see if they had any tips for paying back student loans. They did have several suggestion and tips for paying student loans that I wanted to share with you today.br /br /1. In order to pay student loans quicker, set up automatic draft so that you can save on your student loan interest rate. Many student loan companies will lower your interest rate if you set up automatic bank drafts each month. Lower interest rates equal more of your payment being applied to the principal loan balance.br /br /2. Review your loans to determine which loans have the highest interest rate and apply any extra payments to those first to pay them in full and stop the interest from accumulating. When the tax stimulus was added to my paycheck, I increased my monthly draft to my student loan by that amount. I was not missing any money each month because the federal stimulus package was new so I was not accustomed yet to receiving more money in my paycheck. Likewise, if you receive a raise go ahead and increase your student loan payment by the amount of the raise in your check before your first payroll check including your raise. If you never see the money, you will not miss it. br /br /3. Consolidating student loans will often lower your interest rate as well as your monthly payment. If possible, continue making the same monthly payments to pay the loans off sooner rather than making the minimum payments each month.br /br /4. If possible, use all or at least a portion of your tax refund to apply to your student loans. Again, tax refunds should not be included in your budget since these are not guaranteed income. Before depositing your refund, go ahead and write the check out for a student loan payment so that you do not spend the refund money or miss it.br /br /5. Pay student loan interest during the time you are attending school if possible. If you carry unsubsidized loans, they will continue to accrue interest. By making at least the interest payments, you can keep the amount of your student loan from growing and accruing more interest. br /br /6. Never miss a payment!
